*** MIDNIGHT HOCKEY LEAGUE SPECIFIC RULES ***
**** New Note Added 2/9/26 ****
***** AS OF MARCH 1, 2026 *****
Post-Game Minor & Double Minor Penalties A
minor or double minor assessed at the buzzer, not as part of a delayed penalty, or after the game, is
considered post-game misconduct and will carry automatic supplemental
discipline. As a
rule of thumb, minors will automatically incur a game misconduct, and
double minors will incur two game misconducts if called after the final
buzzer.
Post-Game Major & Match Penalties Any
major penalty assessed at the buzzer or after the game will
automatically be recorded as a match penalty, regardless of intent. All disciplinary infractions called after the final buzzer will automatically trigger a league review.
***** 3 Penalty Rule ***** In an effort to avoid injuries due to erratic players and keep the game clean, the league has adopted the three (3) penalty rule. Any player who is assessed three (3) penalties during a game will be ejected for the remainder of that game. A game ejection does not carry an additional game suspension. Please note, a double-minor four (4) minute penalty is considered two (2) penalties.
OVERTIME RULES:
**** Regular Season: Games will be 4 on 4, 5 minute RUNNING clock. The clock only stops when the official blows the whistle to assess a penalty or for an injured player. The clock will start running once the official drops the puck after he/she has placed the penalized player in the penalty box. The stopping of the clock while a penalty is assessed will prevent teams from intentionally fouling an opponent in an attempt to ‘run out’ the clock and force a shootout. Line changes are only permitted on the fly. No line changes allowed during stoppage of play. Any player whose penalty has not expired at the end of overtime, is not permitted to participate in the shootout. If still tied, there will be a 3 player shootout followed by sudden death shootout. Home team decides who goes first. Any unused time outs in regulation, would be available to use in overtime.
Over 40 Goalie rules:
*****Please read the below for explanation of the Over 40 age requirements for goalies in over-40 league: Goalies can be under 40 can play, as long as they are over 30 (25 and over for women). In an emergency situation (League must be notified by email in advance). Teams can use a male goalie that is under 40 but over 25. If a team suspects someone of being under-age, they will bring it to the attention of the on ice officials. The officials will ask the goalie for identification and verify that goalie is of proper age. Officials will then notify league in writing if there is a violation of this rule. Teams found to use an underage goalie will forfeit the game.
Midnight Hockey has changed the rules on fouls assessed for high-sticking . The high sticking rule will be will be enforced as follows: Inadvertent - 2 minutes Careless or reckless - 4 minutes Intentional - 5 and a game Match - if injury results All other stick fouls (cross checking, slashing) carry a 4 minute penalty. The 2 and 5 penalty has been eliminated.
